East West Box

2017. Softwood, mahogany.

This box is an essay. I built it for an English class, in response to the novel Persepolis, which tells the story of a young woman coming of age during the Iranian revolution. Like the main character, the box is split down the middle between the West, represented by pan- el-style construction, and the East, represented by marquetry work and patterns that suggest the Five Pillars of Islam.
